History

Historically, DSW has had a hard time finding good quality developer courseware, so we have written our own. This started long before I was hired -- DSW wrote their own 2-weeks worth of high-qualtiy Clipper courseware back in the dark ages. Writing courseware is a tradition at DSW, and sometimes others take notice.

AppDev

For several years, DSW provided traveling instructors for AppDev, to teach various topics (like FoxPro, Access, etc.). In 1994, the Next Greatest Thing Ever was about to come out -- dBASE for Windows! AppDev decided to start teaching it, and needed courseware. DSW and another company collaborated and wrote the courseware for it. This was our first real foray into writing courseware for another company. Since then, we have created several sets of courseware for them.

Borland and Delphi

When Delphi 1.0 was released, Borland contracted a training company to produce courseware for it. We didn't realize this, so we created our own courseware. We started teaching classes and conducting traveling training seminars ("World Tours"), all using our courseware. Some of the attendees to these events were Borland engineers, and they thought our courseware was much better than Borland's "official" courseware. When it came time for the Delphi 2.0 release, they put the courseware contract up for bid, and we won it. The first Delphi courseware was the beginning of a long partnership with Borland, which lasted until they merged with Visigenic, which had their own training division and their own courseware production capabilities. We ended up writing a variety of courseware for Borland (pretty much all the courseware they needed during the time when we were writing for them).
